Lean in 15 – a new way of eating

I’m going to try a new way of eating. And I don’t mean I’ll be using chopsticks, or murmuring incantations, or inhaling my food through my nose. It’ll still be going in my mouth as per usual.

The difference is that, instead of just eating whatever I can be bothered to cook up on any particular day, I will be following the advice of this glossy-haired fellow:

His name is Joe Wicks AKA The Body Coach. But why have I decided to take this man’s advice over any other self-professed weight loss magician? Well, firstly because there’s something fundamentally trustworthy about his happy little face and puppy-dog eyes. He is the visual embodiment of a wholesome, healthy lifestyle. Surfer-boy curls, Californian tan, perfect white teeth, well-made burgundy jumper. You kind of just want to do everything he says. It’s a good thing he’s not a fascist (as far as I know). Secondly, it wasn’t even my idea it was my boyfriend’s, and thirdly,  he doesn’t promote starvation, meal replacements, or anything particularly disruptive to my life and love of food.

I’ve tried all sorts of fat-loss plans over all the years in which I’ve been a slave to Western beauty ideals, and they all have one thing in common: they don’t work. Not because the creators are lying, or misleading us, but because they simply don’t fit in with my personality or way of life.

I love eating – it’s an important ritual in my day and if I’m not allowed to do it, my soul slowly starts to die. This means that things like the 5:2 (fasting) and Herbalife (meal replacement shakes) just don’t work for me. They make me lose weight rapidly but they don’t make me happy, so they’re not sustainable.

Lean in 15 – how does it work then?

We bought the Lean in 15 recipe book, which explains the philosophy behind the plan and helps you understand what your body needs and when.

The idea behind this sparky chap’s fat loss diet is simple:

You earn what you eat. 

Some recipes are low carb, designed for non-exercising days. Some are designed to refuel your carb store after exercising. They’re all healthy and quick to make (most are designed to be made in 15 minutes, hence the name. But on that note he originally chose the name Lean in 15 because he started an Instagram channel where he’d post 15 minute videos of whatever healthy thing he was cooking at the time).

Fortunately, I love to exercise. I do it most days of the week – either a nice leisurely run down the seafront, or my not-so-leisurely fitness bootcamp classes. Joe, AKA The Body Coach (do I have to keep saying that?) recommends doing 15 – 20 minutes of HIIT (high intensity interval training) five to six days a week. I’ve decided I’m going to add a 15 minute HIIT workout to the beginning of each day in addition to my current activity levels, just because it sounds like a good thing to do. HIIT is supposed to kick-start your metabolism and help your body burn fat all day long.

New food

The good thing is, it will encourage me to be more experimental with my cooking. I’m used to cooking the same old things every day, using the same seasoning so everything turns out tasting the same even if it is different.

The one issue I may have is that I don’t really like cooking. I find it quite boring and time consuming – but that’s probably just laziness and once we’ve stocked our cupboards with the right ingredients and I’ve coerced my boyfriend into doing most of the cooking, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Nice philosophy

Joe says throw out your bathroom scales. Throw them out the window. Smash them up with a hammer. Saw them into tiny little pieces. They’re evil. They make you fat, if anything. Or something along those lines.

I agree. I TOTALLY AGREE JOE. As a tall girl, my weight always looks really scary on the scales. But the truth is,  weight doesn’t matter. It’s about how you feel. I often feel like I’m wearing a fat suit – not because I’m horrendously overweight, but because I get bloated. I have IBS (don’t we all) so I don’t poo normally. Sometimes I don’t poo for days. Sometimes I forget what poo looks like. I have no idea what poo SHOULD look like. Mine’s always different. Like a lucky dip.

Hopefully with these lean meals my IBS symptoms will improve. I’ll feel better. I’ll have glossy curls, and white teeth, and a wholesome burgundy jumper, and the world will love me.
